Your septic system can be an expensive and time-consuming repair item when you are placing your home on the real estate market. Maintaining your system with annual septic tank pumping and conscientious use of the system can extend its life by several years. Here are some other useful tips that will help when you are preparing to have your system tested.
- Check all toilet tanks and water faucets in the home to make sure they are not leaking. Toilets can be checked by opening the lid and looking in or listening for water flow. If there is any leakage have this fixed as soon as possible. Even a slight drip can add hundreds of gallons of water to your septic system every day.
- Be careful not to overload the system 3 days prior to the test with multiple high volume water usages – normally limited use is acceptable.
- If you want to have the tank pumped, do the pumping at least 30 days prior to the test date and then use the system normally. We will pump the tank during the testing so it is not necessary to pump it prior to our arrival.
- Make sure all pipes that come above ground are marked or visible, this will give the tester more time to analyze the system. Current regulations require all septic pipes extend 12” above the ground and have caps.
